Robert Weston Griffin

September 17, 1947   ~   November 16, 2023

Robert 'Bob' Griffin passed away on November 16, 2023 in Indianapolis, IN at the age of 76. Born in Indianapolis on September 17, 1947 to Leonard and Jean (Fowler) Griffin, he went on to live on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and several places in between as his academic and military careers called for. He would ultimately retire in Indiana where he was in close proximity to his many friends of 60+ years after a post-military career in federal contracting.

After graduating from Riley High School in South Bend in 1965, Bob began his military career as a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He went on to become a highly decorated member of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps and served in both Viet Nam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, and Desert Storm. He was incredibly proud of his service to his country which took him all over the world via air, land, and sea, and was an active member of multiple USMA alumni groups and veteran's organizations. An avid hiker, swimmer, boxer, runner, sailor, bicyclist, and golfer, Bob was also an outdoor enthusiast. The only items in his office that outnumbered his military commendations and awards were the visitor guides, trail maps, and atlases from places he'd been or was planning to go. He had a great curiosity for the countless places he visited and was always game to explore whatever activities they offered and indulge in the local desserts.

Bob was a loving son, father, grandfather, and brother and leaves behind his daughter Erin Askar (husband David) of Ventura, CA, grandchildren Evan and Danielle Askar, his sister, Susan Chesser (husband Terry) of Falls Church, VA, and so many beloved friends and extended family. The stories that continue to flow in from his large circle describe a man who made a lasting impact on the communities he lived in and who changed many lives for the better through his friendship, support, and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Christopher Griffin.

Lake Michigan held a very special place in Bob's heart. As a child, his family took numerous trips along the Michigan shore on his family's boat and in his retirement, he continued to explore the shoreline, hiking and camping along the way. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alliance for the Great Lakes at Greatlakes.org.

A memorial service for Bob will be held at the Old West Point Cemetery in New York, April 2024, where he will be inurned in the columbarium.
