Richard L. Smith , 63, died in his home in Chicago, IL, on Thursday, September 8, 2005, after being diagnosed with cancer in April 2005.

Richard had been a resident of Chicago since 1973. He was born in South Bend, IN, where he graduated from Riley High School in 1960. He attended Bethel College, Mishawaka, IN. In 1964 Mr. Smith graduated from the American Conservatory of Music, Chicago, IL. He was an accomplished musician on the piano and pipe organ. He completed a master's of music degree …

Richard L. Smith , 63, died in his home in Chicago, IL, on Thursday, September 8, 2005, after being diagnosed with cancer in April 2005.

Richard had been a resident of Chicago since 1973. He was born in South Bend, IN, where he graduated from Riley High School in 1960. He attended Bethel College, Mishawaka, IN. In 1964 Mr. Smith graduated from the American Conservatory of Music, Chicago, IL. He was an accomplished musician on the piano and pipe organ. He completed a master's of music degree from Indiana University in 1966. Mr. Smith was a professor at Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, IN, until 1973 prior to teaching at The American Conservatory of Music, Chicago. He played the pipe organ at several churches in the Chicago area. In 1984 he resigned to pursue a career with Re/Max Realty.

Mr. Smith was born in South Bend, IN, on March 2, 1942, to the late John and Ruth Smith . He is survived by his companion, Derry Bankston, Chicago, IL; one sister, Mrs. Donna (Robert) Brunner, Fishers, IN; two nieces, Mrs. Shari (Shaun) Hill, Springfield, IL, and Mrs. Kimberly (Robert) Logan, Fishers, IN; two aunts; many cousins and close friends.

Mr. Smith had been a Re/Max broker in North Chicago since 1984. He was a member of College Wesleyan Church, Marion, IN. Early in his music career he held the associate certificate in the American Guild of Organists.

Visitation will be in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN, at 1:00 p.m. prior to a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 10th. Burial will be at Southlawn Cemetery
