Warren E. Kirkwood

November 27, 1942 ~ December 7, 2022 80 Years Old

Warren E. Kirkwood, of Mishawaka, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 with his family by his side at the age of 80. Warren was born on November 27, 1942 in Linton, IN., to Ralph and Florence (Dickey) Kirkwood. He moved to South Bend as a young child. He graduated from Riley High School and after graduating served 3 years in the Army from 1962 -1965. On April 30, 1966 in South Bend he was united in marriage to Ann Derby.

Warren’s first career was with the postal service, where he worked as a mail handler, clerk, and postal security officer, and letter carrier. Warren’s job transfers with the US Postal Service took him to Des Moines, Iowa and the Indianapolis area where he made many lifelong friends. After retirement Warren began a second career as a Methodist Pastor after graduating from Indianapolis University in 2012. While serving at Albright United Methodist in Mishawaka, he became instrumental in starting the MAC food pantry and served as its director for almost 20 years. After retiring from Albright United Methodist Church, he was reappointed to First United Methodist Church in South Bend. He had a real heart for missions and his message is to read 1st Corinthians 13, The Love Chapter. Warren loved being a pastor.

In 2009 he received the Drum Major award for community service from Mayor Jeff Rea. He developed a love of wearing Hawaiian shirts, a tradition he picked up from his father, Ralph. His family asked that those who come to his Celebration of Life would wear them in his honor if they would like.

Warren is survived by his wife of 56 years, and their daughters, Katy (Manuel) Rodriguez of Indianapolis, IN., Christine (Carlos) Soto of Indianapolis, IN., Peggy (Juan) Quintana of Mishawaka, IN., along with 7 grandchildren, Isabelle and Carlos Soto, Carolina, Faith, Casey, Toby, and Jessica Quintana. He is also survived by his sister, Delores Kirkwood of Elkhart, and a host of nieces, nephews, and several bonus children, and his beloved pet beagle - Flo. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Frances Kirkwood-Slye.

Warren was able to enjoy Thanksgiving with his family this year before going into the hospital. The family would like to thank all the 10th floor staff at Memorial Hospital, and the Center for Hospice Care/Raclin Hospice House for their kindness and care during this time.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at Palmer Funeral Home – River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend, In 46615. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.
