Claudine Tiny Hart (Eby)

Claudine I. (Hart) Eby

Nov. 15, 1916 - Oct. 5, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Claudine I. Eby, 92, of Arlington Heights, IL, was born November 15, 1916, in South Bend, IN, to Arthur and Mabel (nee Jester) Hart. She died peacefully on October 5, 2009, in Arlington Heights. Claudine grew up in South Bend, IN.

She graduated from Riley High School.

Claudine's good judgment in evaluating character, coupled with good verbal and organization skills, saw her becoming the credit manager of Robertson's Department Store after graduation from high school, at that time the largest department store in South Bend. She worked at Robertson's until her marriage to the love of her life, Lawrence T. Eby, also of South Bend. The newlyweds settled in Linden, New Jersey, where Lawrence was a laboratory director of Standard Oil of New Jersey, now Exxon.

Claudine was busy and involved in the rearing of her two daughters, various book discussion groups, community activities and her church. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Roselle, New Jersey, Claudine served several terms as program director and then president of the women's society. She also taught 11th grade Sunday school classes at the church for many years. Later years saw Lawrence and Claudine moving to Arlington Heights, IL, where Lawrence became director of the labs at USG Corporation. Both were active members of The First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights, and Claudine became a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Northwest Community Hospital.

A daughter of the Depression, Claudine instilled in her daughters, and later her grandchildren, the value of a good education, the value of hard work, and the ability to face whatever challenges life presented with courage and head held high. Always a caring listener, Claudine offered insightful, compassionate counsel and empathy both to friends and those she loved, while encouraging and expecting that one do one's best at all times. The true matriarch to her family, Claudine had deep faith in God and lived her life according to her principles and faith. She led by example. She will be deeply missed by her family.

Her survivors include her daughter, Jane (John) David; grandchildren, Jennifer S. Fisher and William C. Korner Jr.; brother-in-law, Douglas (Dottie) Eby; nieces, Nancy Harter, Barbara Ann (Jerry) Kazmierczak, Ann Kazmierczak, Kathleen (Julius) Kolosowsky, Barbara Marie (Frank) Simko, David (Karen) Eby and Donald Eby.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lawrence T. Eby; daughter, Claudia Ann Eby; siblings, Arthur Hart Jr. and Caroline (Frank) Schilling; and by her parents.

Visitation was held from 3 to 7 PM Friday, October 16, 2009, in the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, (4 blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights, and will be held today, October 17, 2009, in First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights, 302 N.
