Vera D. (Hoglund) Maurer

Vera D. Maurer, 83, formerly of Thornhill Drive in South Bend, Ind., passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Bronson Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Mich. She was born on June 10, 1920, to the union of Herbert and August Hoglund. On July 29, 1942, as Vera Hoglund, she married Richard A. Maurer, who preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Bernice Elley in 1993.

Vera graduated from Riley High School in 1938 and was part of the planning committee to celebrate the 20th class reunion, along with one every year after that. She belonged to the Studebaker Golf League and Erskine 9-Hole Gold League, where she was treasurer for many years. Vera also ran a Cressy & Everett Two-Day Golf League that was very popular for years. She worked at Shidler Furniture Store, the Credit Bureau of South Bend, Bendix Aircraft Components Division and the City of South Bend. Vera was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where she was baptized at 3 months and confirmed at the age of 13.

She is survived by a son, Richard M. (Miriam) Maurer of Portage, Mich.; four grandchildren, Scott, Brian and Kristen Maurer of Portage, and Jennifer (Matt) DeMaagd of Hickory Corners, Mich.; and by two sisters, Janet Petrokubi of Venice, Fla., and Helen Cook of Sarasota, Fla.
