SOUTH BEND - Joan Mumford, 89, of South Bend died at 10:05 a.m. Sunday, January 3, 2009 in Providence House following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Mumford was born December 19, 1920, in Silver Lake, IN, to the late Charles and Nellie (Shobe) Zimmerman and had lived in South Bend since 1930. On August 2, 1940 in South Bend as Joan Zimmerman she married Norton B. Mumford who preceded her in death on January 24, 2007. She was also preceded in death by a brother, D. Kenneth Zimmerman.

She is survived by two sons, James T. Mumford (Mary Beth) and John B. Mumford (Rosanne) both of South Bend; two grandsons, Thomas Mumford of South Bend and James Mumford of Bollingbrook, IL; one sister, Katherine Johnson (Frank) of Ft. Wayne, IN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan retired as the owner-operator along with her husband, Norton, of Mumford's Market on Portage Ave. after 34 years. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Providence House for Joan's care.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 6th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. with Rev. Mick Sommers of Harbor Light Hospice officiating. Committal services and entombment will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call today, January 5th from 4 until 7 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Harbor Light Hospice, 4330 Miami St., South Bend, IN, 46614.
