Gary L. Marvel

January 25/1944 - May 30, 2011 (age 67)

Gary L. Marvel, 67, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2011 in his home with his daughter, Michelle, and granddaughter, Ashley, by his side after a courageous battle with congestive heart failure.

He is survived by his daughters, Michelle E. Marvel of Delray Beach, FL, and Melissa A. Buddeke and husband Paul Buddeke of Louisville, KY, and beloved wife of Judy Marvel. He was the proud grandfather of Brad, Ashley and Luke. He was the loving uncle to Cheryl A. Edwards and husband Kent Edwards of Benton, KY; Edward W. Marvel and wife Tanya M. Marvel of Brooklyn Park, MN; and great uncle to Devyn, Lauren, Owen, Eli and Maia. He was also cherished by his godsons, William and Michael Schubert of Savannah, GA. He was preceded in death by Connie Marvel, Wayne and Kathy Marvel, and his parents, Jane and Jerry Marvel.

Gary was born in Torrington, CT on January 25, 1944. He was raised and educated in South Bend, Indiana with traditional “handshake values.” He graduated from Tri-State University with a Mechanical Engineering degree. Gary spent over 25 years building and managing a successful international advertising agency, Marvel, Inc., with offices in Connecticut and Florida.

Additional credits include being an Honorary member of Alpha Phi Gamma, the National Journalism Society, a Certified Business Communicator of the Business Professional Advertising Association, of which he was a past President, past Chairman of Red Cross charity functions, and he had obtained Real Estate and Mortgage Brokerage licenses from the State of Florida.

Gary shared a lifetime of stories with his family, and left us with numerous, wonderful memories to cherish. Lovingly known as “GrandCap” to the youngest in the family, Gary was especially proud of his grandkids’ accomplishments and supportive of their goals with Brad being an accomplished pole vaulter, Ashley (a.k.a. ‘Cash’ as GrandCap called her) following her dream of being an exceptional volleyball player and Luke being a cross country runner and swimming star.

Gary was an avid sport fisherman, played guitar and sang in his early years, was a fantastic card player, especially with his bridge group of 20+ years, and enjoyed attending and watching Nascar and Indy car races. Gary was also a Corvette enthusiast, owning over fifteen of them during his lifetime. In the last few years, he loved to travel on cruise ships; he enjoyed the salt air, the ocean breeze, the warmth of the sunshine, and, of course, his love for the ‘crap’ table.

Many of us teased him that he was like a cat with nine lives because he had overcome so many medical challenges throughout the last twenty-plus years. Despite everything that he faced, he lived everyday to his fullest, which always included humor and Dr. Gordon’s until his last day. Even though his life was short, he would tell you that he had lived a full, rewarding life that encompassed so much pride, joy, laughter and happiness.

Gary will be remembered by all who knew him, dearly missed by his family and held in all of our memories and hearts forever.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Endometriosis Research Center, 630 Ibis Drive, Delray Beach, Florida 33444.

A celebration of Gary’s life will take place in Bimini, Bahamas, his home away from home.
