Bonnie Lynn Jenks Shafer

March 21, 1947 - June 3, 2018

SOUTH BEND - Bonnie Lynn Jenks, 71, was born in South Bend, IN on Mar. 21, 1947. She was the daughter of Kenneth and Irene Shafer and attended Riley High School (Class of ‘65). She graduated from Indiana University and in 1969 married her lifelong husband, Stephen Jenks. Bonnie and Steve moved to Florida in 1972, where they raised two children. Bonnie served as an administrator in the Pinellas County School System for nearly 25 years, retiring in 2013. She is survived by her husband, Steve of Largo, FL; her son, Nathaniel of Largo, FL; her daughter, Amber (Justin) Frederiksen and their daughter, Naila of Bonita Springs, FL; and her sister, Nancy Tompkins of South Bend. She is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Kenneth Shafer. Her main passions in life were birding, gardening, and playing with her beloved granddaughter, Naila. Bonnie was an avid conservationist who devoted countless hours to protecting local bird nesting habitat. Donations in her honor can be made to the St. Petersburg Audubon Society. Surrounded by her loving family, she passed away at home on June 3, 2018. Bonnie was a caring and pure spirit, loved by all who knew her. Though she has left us too soon, the influence of her kindness and generosity will live on through her family and friends.
