NC Coleman, Jr.
June 29, 1948 ~ January 7, 2024
NC Coleman Jr., 75 of South Bend, Indiana departed this life on Sunday, January 7, 2024. He was born on June 29, 1948, in Thornton, Mississippi to the union of NC Coleman Sr. and Rosie Mae (Powell) Coleman.
NC, affectionately known as “BaBro” he received his early education attending school in Eudora, Arkansas. After the family moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1957, he continued his education through the South Bend Community School Corporation where he was a student at Oliver Elementary, Franklin Elementary, Henry Studebaker Elementary/Junior High School, and completed his studies at James Whitcomb Riley High School. While there, he played football and ran track.
His work experience began with the Coffee Cup Restaurant and then through Project Step where he was assigned various projects. NC later found employment with Steel Warehouse Inc. where he was a general laborer, spending most of his employment there as a tow-motor operator, retiring on November 18, 2010, after 45 years of service.
His hobbies included barbequing, dancing, watching and playing sports, and spending quality time with family and friends. He was part of the original planning committee for the Southeast Side Reunion which began in 2000. NC became a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Willie V. Williams (deceased). Having received Christ at an early age in life, he was baptized by Rev. William McRae (deceased). NC worked with the Men’s Brotherhood as Secretary; President of the Usher Board; Usher Drill Instructor; Trustee; and the bus driver for the Transportation Ministry of the church. NC also served as the Usher Drill Instructor for the Northwestern Indiana District Missionary Baptist Association. In later years, he became a founding member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Lee H. Montgomery Jr. (deceased). At Antioch, he continued his usher ministry by becoming the President and Drill Instructor of the Usher Board where he trained ushers as young as 4 years old. NC also served on the Trustee Board and was about that protocol and order. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather.
NC leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Stephanie Neal; two sons: Leroy O. Mitchell and Carlos D. (Teresa) Coleman Sr.; 40 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one brother, Eric A. J. (Robin) Redmon; a sister, Bettie L. Redmon; two half-sisters: Mattie and Keisha; three half-brothers: Cedric Coleman, Eddie Archie, and Freddie Archie; a stepson, Arthur Chapman; a stepdaughter, Felicia Hubbard; goddaughters: Michelle Lloyd Works, Angela Sinclair, and Andrea Pope; a dear aunt, Ruby Underwood; special brothers: Gilbert Marsh, Jessie McKelry, and Deacon Joseph Sessom; special sisters: Gwendolyn “Poochie” Shaw, Johnnie “Red” Kimmons, Dorothy “Dot” Hairston, Ida Kyle, and Christine Chaney; along with a host of other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Rosie Mae and Alex Redmon; brother, Sylvester Redmon; birth‑father, NC Coleman Sr.; a sister, Lee Agnes Coleman; a half-sister, Dorothy Tensley; uncles and aunts: Palmo Lee (Carrie) Simmons, David Lee (Henrietta) Simmons, Robert Underwood, Leon (Katherine) Dillard, Otis (Beatrice) Camper, Ludy (Maxine) Redmon, and John Hunter Simmons.
