Margery Rose Cira (Hintz)

Margery Rose (Cira) Hintz
Jan 5, 1937- October 31, 2013

Margie Hintz, 76, loving wife, devoted mother, sister, teacher, grandmother, and friend, passed away in her home on October 31, 2013.  She was surrounded by the love of her husband, children and Frank Sinatra music.

She was the only daughter of Joseph and Rose (DeCola) Cira. She is survived by her brothers, Victor (Helen) Cira, Robert (MaryAnn) Cira, and her sister-in-law Rose Cira. She was preceded in death by her brother Joseph Cira, Jr.

On Oct 21, 1961, in the Cathedral of St Matthew, she married the love of her life, Norbert A. Hintz Sr. Together they had four children, who brought much life and laughter into their world.  They loved to travel, shared a passion for cooking and took pride in their beautiful garden.  Even through Margie’s fifteen year illness, their devotion to each other never wavered.

She is survived by her loving children, Wendy Nace, Norbert (Liesl) Hintz Jr., Margo Hintz- (Greg) Brehmer, and Amy Jo (David) Klosterman; grandchildren, Alaina (Neal) Meyer, Emily Nace, Addison Wilk, Sophia Wilk, and Nathaniel Wilk; and great-granddaughter, Opal Meyer.

Margie’s love for Indiana began while obtaining her Bachelor’s in teaching at Indiana University, Bloomington. She earned her Master’s degree in Elementary Education at IUSB while teaching fulltime and raising her family.  Margie was a 4th grade teacher for 22 years and especially enjoyed teaching Indiana History.  Her students delighted when receiving Mrs. Hintz’s “hints from Hintz” and her cup of homemade cocoa.  Margie was recognized for her dedication and for making a difference in a student’s life.  When she retired, St. Matthew School established an award in her name honoring a student who excelled in Indiana history.

Margie was a gifted artist and many of her paintings and drawings are hung throughout her house.   She taught Tole painting classes in her home. One of her students became a prolific painter, who was well known in the South Bend area. Margie also studied watercolor painting under the direction of Professor Droege.  During her summer vacations, Margie found much pleasure driving on country roads looking for a barn or landscape to paint.

Margie also loved to cook, sing and was admiringly teased as “the hostest with the mostest”.  Margie typically had a smile on her face and a contagious laugh that would make everyone happy.  She is often referenced by her friends as being able to walk into a room and instantly brighten everyone’s mood.  Even with the effects of a brain injury, she managed to show her personality and express her love for her family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 5, at the Cathedral of St. Matthew.  Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. Monday November 4, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend.

Expressions of sympathy may be offered to St. Matthew School, where Margie worked, via the Bishop Crowley Fund, c/o St. Matthew Cathedral School, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, IN 46613; or to the Center for Hospice Care, who provided excellent care and support to Margie and the family during the past year (special thanks to Jennifer, Darlene, Debbie, Kelly, Demarcia, Latasha, Dana and the entire Hospice team), 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN  46545.
