Jim L Snyder - Class Of 1952 VIEW PROFILE

Jim L. Snyder

September 28, 1934 ~ April 16, 2014 (age 79)

Jimmie L. "Jim" Snyder, of DeLand, FL, was born on September 28, 1934, in South Bend, IN, and passed away peacefully at Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, Orange City, on April 16, 2014.

He attended Riley High School, Purdue University (BSEE) and Indiana University (MBA). He married his high school sweetheart, Carol Ann Mitchell on Sept. 3, 1955, and was married to her for more than 58 years. Jim's life revolved around his wife and six children. He was very proud of their many accomplishments, all having followed his philosophy of drive, determination and desire throughout their lives.

He worked at Westinghouse Electric, Brunswick and Sparton Electronics, from which he retired in 1999 as Director of Operations. After retirement, Jim served as concession manager for Stetson University, while also working at the scoring table for mens and womens basketball. He was active in St. Peter Catholic Church, working in the mens organization, twice co-chairman of the October festival, serving as a lector, school board president, St. Peter Catholic School addition project manager and on the finance committee. His family remembers him as a man of many talents, including being able to fix anything with duct tape, making delicious keeflies, cookies and candy for those lucky enough to receive his popular Christmas plates, and his extraordinary golf game (at least he thought so). His family will always miss the unique sound of his whistle that you could hear across the neighborhood causing them to come running when it was time to eat, his big, ear-to-ear grin every time he made a funny joke (sometimes at your expense), and the family tradition of initiating new friends by shoving the whip cream tub or a cake into the newcomer's hand.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Welcome "Red" Snyder and Audrey Long Snyder. Jim loved his wife Carol with all his heart and that love was evident in their more than 58-year marriage (twenty-three of them happy, as he would joke). Jim is survived by his children: sons Jeff (Roberta) of Daytona Beach, Mike (Julie Hill) of Flagler Beach, Doug (Doreen) of Orlando, Tom (Annabelle) of Orlando, daughters Michelle (Antio) Espinosa of Potomac, MD, and Elizabeth and Elizabeth's boyfriend Doug Allen of Daytona Beach. Jim was not only an excellent role model for his six children, but was influential in his grandchildren's lives (Josh, David, RaeLynn, Anna, Matthew, Kelsie, Lili). They and his several great-grandchildren will always be grateful for the time he spent with them.

Jim enjoyed reading, beach vacations, working in the yard, basketball, football, golf, playing games when friends were visiting and the lasting, thirst-quenching experience of having visited San Francisco to attend a friend's daughter's wedding.

Jim's spirit of volunteerism was appreciated by everyone he encountered and he leaves behind lifelong friends in the Kinsey, Rinderle and Frey families. Dad and Grandpa may have left this earth, but his memory and love will forever stay in his family's and friend's hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter Catholic School Scholarship Fund. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014, with a reception to follow at the St. Peter Social Hall. All arrangements are under the careful direction of Allen Summerhill Funeral Home, DeLand. All are invited to share their memories of Jim at www.allensummerhillfuneralhome.com. Allen-Summerhill DeLand is in charge.
