SOUTH BEND - Ralph A. Stickley, 85, of South Bend, IN, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side at 6:35 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2011, in Southfield Village. He was born on June 22, 1926, to Arthur L. and Lou Ellen (Shirk) Stickley.

Mr. Stickley moved to South Bend as a very young child and attended Lincoln School. He went on to graduate from Riley High School in 1944, where he played football. After high school, he joined the armed services, where he served in the European Theater of Operations with the 89th infantry division.

After the service, he went to work for Oliver Farm Equipment as an apprentice patternmaker. On July 25, 1947, he married Isabel Cohen, his high school sweetheart. They celebrated their 64th anniversary this year. In 1958, he began work with Bremen Castings, where he eventually became president. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1984. After retirement, he devoted his time to furniture building for family and friends, a lifelong passion of his. He also enjoyed spending time at their lake home in Pentwater, Michigan. He was a longtime member of the American Foundryman Society, having served on their board.

Mr. Stickley is survived by his wife, Isabel; his son, Kim (Pam) Stickley of Nappanee, IN; his daughter, Janice Stickley of Shingle Springs, CA; five grandchildren, Lisa (Jeremy) Bear of Nappanee, IN, Kyle (Erin) Stickley of Nappanee, IN, Sara (Gary) Nephew of Nappanee, IN, Brienna White of Shingle Springs, CA, and Klare White of Shingle Springs, CA; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Marie Delahousaye, Ruth Lawrence and Joyce Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 21, 2011, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. The family will receive friends from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home and one hour prior to the services Friday.
