SOUTH BEND - Helen Agnes Manuszak, 87, of South Bend, IN, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, while at Sanctuary at Holy Cross following a brief illness.

Mrs. Manuszak was born January 20, 1926, in South Bend, to the late Cecelia (Stipovits) and Matthew J. Miholick, and was a lifetime area resident. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin J. Manuszak, and by two sisters, Cecilia Reiter and Mary H. Clubine, and three brothers, Matthew, Edward and Elmer Miholick. She is survived by six nieces, Carol A. Fallat, Kathleen M. Paidle and Pat Bickel, all of South Bend, Marla Corbett of Granger, Marianne Hayes of Terre Haute, IN, and Margaret Miholick of Indianapolis, IN; one nephew, Richard Clubine of Peach Tree, GA; and many, great-, great-great-, and great-great-great-nieces and nephews.

Helen attended Oliver Elementary School, St. Mary of the Assumption, Our Lady of Hungary Junior High School and graduated from Riley High School.

She also attended and graduated from the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She also attended Indiana University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree, General Nursing, Public Health and Teacher's License in Nursing. She also attended the University of Michigan and received a School Nursing Certificate, the University of Wisconsin, receiving a Labor Education and Economics Certificate, and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Master's Degree in Education Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, and a Supervisor of Guidance License. She received a post-graduate certificate from Indiana University in Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

She had been employed in a number of places including, Uniroyal Research Laboratory, St. Joseph's Hospital and Memorial, where she was a private-duty nurse. She was on staff at The Osteopathic Hospital, a nurse at Camp Tannadoonah and a school nurse for 31 years at multiple South Bend Community Schools, including Marquette, Central, Colfax, Madison, Lafayette, McKinley, Swanson, and Clay High School.

Helen served as a precinct committeeman for 19 years and was a member of the Health Council of St. Joseph County and the State Health Careers Committee. She was a past president of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO and an AFL-CIO representative for the St. Joseph County Council. She was past chairman of the seventh district of the Indiana State Nurses Association, School Nurse Section, membership chairman of the Indiana State Nurses Association of St. Joseph County, a group leader for Parenthood in a Free Nation, parent discussion Group, a member of the Counseling of Girls Steering Committee for the YWCA, St. Joseph County Mental Health Association, Indiana University and Notre Dame Alumni Associations, South Bend Alumni Association and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. She was also a past sponsor of the Clay High School Association for Special Needs Students and American Heart Association volunteer.

A Mass for this dedicated lady will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. (noon) Monday, May 20th, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, N. Hill St., with Rev. John P. Riley, C.S.C., officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
