Jerry W. Ward, 89, passed away at 7:27 am Sunday, June 9, 2013 in Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame.  He was born in South Bend on November 9, 1923 to the late Coy and Ruth (Brant) Ward, and remained a lifelong area resident. On June 21, 1980, in St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elkhart, Jerry married the former Rosemary E. (Erler) Mueller, who preceded him in death on November 24, 2012.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Greg Mueller; and a brother, Rev. Max Ward.
 
Jerry is survived by a daughter, Judith (Larry) Shaw of Elkhart; sons, Chris (Evelyn) Mueller of Warsaw and Jack (Korina) Mueller of Granger; eleven grandchildren, Amy (Ben) Hurwitz, Sara (Fred) Kirchhoff, Carrie Mueller, Jennifer (Anthony) Mistretta, Jessica (Albert) Alston, Ryan Shaw, Matthew Shaw, Dr. Chad (Josie) Shaw, DDS, Brett Shaw, Holly (Tom) Dell and Greg (Lisa) Mueller.  Additionally, he is survived by six great grandchildren, Caitlyn, Charlie, Sawyer, Olivia, Fred “F.J.”, and Lauren; as well as one brother, Dr. Burl (Herberta) Ward of Billings, MT.
 
After high school, Jerry served his country honorably in the United States Army during WW II.  He worked as an automatic pin setter mechanic at Chippewa Bowl and Beacon Bowl until retiring in 1985 after 29 years.  Jerry also worked as a farmer on his farm in Granger for many years.  Jerry was known as a handyman who could take two sticks and create the Taj Mahal.
 
The family wishes to thank all the staff of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame who provided outstanding care to Jerry in his final days.  Your kindness will not be forgotten.  The family would also like to thank Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.
 
Funeral services for Jerry will be 11:00 am Thursday, June 13, 2013 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Rev. Matthew Cowden of St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church will officiate. Private entombment will be held at a later date for both Rosemary and Jerry at Highland Cemetery.  Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 - 7:00 Wednesday, June 12 as well as one hour prior to services Thursday in the funeral home.
