SOUTH BEND - Thern Leroy Pope, 61, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 surrounded by his family. He was born in South Bend, Indiana on October 14, 1950 to the union of Horace Pope and Theresia (Ward) Pope.

Thern attended Studebaker, Oliver and Franklin Elementary Schools and then graduated from Riley High School. He received his certificate in Business Studies from Indiana University South Bend.

His early work history includes 14 years for Gentners before they closed the company. He then worked for Miles Laboratories in South Bend. Later, the company moved his department to Elkhart, Indiana, where he then became a supervisor. After Miles Laboratories closed its doors in Elkhart, the company then moved to Mishawaka, Indiana and operated under its new name, Bayer HealthCare. Thern was employed 30 years with Bayer HealthCare and retired from there on April 30, 2010.

On May 10, 1976, Thern united in holy matrimony to Margaret (Sane) Fielder. Their children, André Pope, Katrina Pope Diggins, Katrina Fielder Ashley, Franklin Fielder and Francine Fielder, brought them much joy. Thern loved to dance and was great at it. He was a very smooth and sharp dancer. He very much enjoyed being around family and friends. His mother started an Annual Pope Hog Roast many years ago on Keasey Street. Thern and Margaret continued with this family tradition along with his brother, Jerry Pope and his wife, Valerie. The Pope Annual Hog Roast was held on Labor Day weekend, rotating between Thern's and Jerry's homes. Family and friends came from all around. Thern and his wife traveled to such places as Paris and London; they cruised with family members on the Nordic Empress one year. He went to Puerto Vallarta & twice to Cabo San Lucas. He visited relatives in Las Vegas, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Mississippi, Tennessee, St. Louis, Kansas City and other states. He loved people and was a friend when others called on him. He was no stranger.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Margaret Pope; children: André (Candance) Pope of Atlanta, Georgia, Katrina Pope-Diggins of Orlando, Florida, Katrina Ashley of Detroit, Michigan, Franklin (Allison) Fielder of South Bend and Francine Fielder of Detroit, Michigan; four siblings: Alphonso (Gladys) Ward of South Bend, Indiana, Horace (Hilary) Denny of London, England, Gerald (Valerie) Pope also of South Bend, & Wilner Pope of South Bend; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services for Thern Leroy Pope will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012 in Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, 137 E. Indiana Avenue. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and then services at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Visit www.clarkoneal.com to sign his guest book.
