Gayle R. Whitmer, 73, Elkhart, formerly of South Bend, died 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at her home. She was born Oct. 22, 1944 in St. Joseph County to Ermal & Myrtle (Hawkins) Smith. She married Philip Whitmer on Oct. 24, 1964.
Surviving are her husband, Philip, Elkhart, children, Laurie (William) Lindsey, Elkhart, Kristen (Pete) Breseman, Hawley, Texas, 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and a brother, Tom (Debbie) Smith, Saginaw, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Gayle worked as a receptionist at Brian King Dental Office, Elkhart. She was also postmistress at Elkhart Post Office and Hearts Desire.
Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2018, at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home, 117, W. Waterford St., Wakarusa. Burial will follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the ALS Center, Indianapolis or to the Humane Society of Elkhart County.
