SOUTH BEND - Darrell Dean Stroup, 67, of South Bend, passed away at 10:08 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009, while at Hook's Rehab Hospital, Indianapolis. Mr. Stroup fell on February 11, 2009, broke his neck and died as a result of the injuries. Mr. Stroup was born March 3, 1942, in Mishawaka, IN, and had lived most of his life in South Bend. His mother died days after his birth and his Aunt Helen and Uncle Russell Stroup raised him in his early childhood.

During his life Mr. Stroup was employed by Goodwill Industries, Pickrell's Floral, Land and Garden, Nickell Moulding, and recently by the South Bend Housing Authority.

He was a graduate of Riley High School.

Mr. Stroup was a baseball umpire for many years, a member of the Moose Lodge and attended Community Baptist Church in South Bend. He was an avid fan and a season ticket holder of Notre Dame women's basketball.

Mr. Stroup is survived by a sister, Ruth (Jerry) White of Stamford, CT; five brothers, Don (Alma) Stroup of Lodi, CA, Dale (Marcia) Stroup of Huntington Beach, CA, William (Joan) Stroup of Lakeville, John (LuAnn) Stroup of South Bend and Daniel (Roberta) Stroup of Indianapolis; two sisters-in-law, Violet Stroup and Christine Stoup; and many nieces and nephews also survive him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Raymond Stroup in 2000; mother, Violet (Maxon) Stroup in 1942; stepmother, Della (Bunch) Stroup in 2001; brother, Louis Richard Stroup in 1996; brother, James Dee Stroup in 2000; and by Uncle Russell and Aunt Helen (Link) Stroup.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009, in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services. Rev. Steve Stadtmiller, pastor of Community Baptist Church, will officiate. A private burial took place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Contributions may be made to the Epilepsy Foundation-Indiana, 3901 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46268.
