June 17, 1943 ~ June 3, 2021 (age 77)

Judith Lynn “Judy” VanDerHeyden, 77, of South Bend passed away at 5:20 a.m. Thursday, June 3rd in her residence following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease surrounded by her loving family.  Judy was born June 17, 1943 in Toledo, OH to Nina L (Montgomerie) and the late John E. Postle and lived most of her life in the South Bend area.  On July 17, 1962 in South Bend as Judy Postle she married Thomas A. VanDerHeyden who survives.  She is also survived by her mother, Nina L. Postle; her children, Christine L. Price (Nathan) of Indianapolis, IN and John A. VanDerHeyden (Jennifer) of Valdosta, GA; five grandchildren, Matthew and James VanDerHeyden, Megan J. Wolberd (Kevin) and Abigail and Thomas Price; three sisters, Barbara Hunting (Fritz) of New London, NH, Nancy Hendrix of South Bend, and Pamela Hill (Robert) of Dallas, TX; and her brother, John Postle (Kathy) of Granger.  Besides her father she was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua VanDerHeyden, and brother-in-law, Dave Hendrix. 

     Judy was a graduate of Riley High School in South Bend. She was a member of the National Honor Society. Judy was involved in the Rainbow Girls for several years and became a Worthy Advisor. During Judy’s high school years at Riley, her family hosted an exchange student, Bente. Judy returned with Bente to spend the summer in Norway with her adopted Norwegian sister.  After high school Judy attended South Bend College of Commerce and attended IUSB. Judy owned Sugar and Spice Preschool Nursery and enjoyed preparing her three- and four-year-old students for kindergarten. After twenty years of teaching, she sold the school and went to work for Graffis Furniture Company in South Bend. She found the change from working with three- and four-year-old to adults a pleasant experience. Throughout her years working at Graffis Furniture her love for interior design grew. Completing work for clients both in South Bend and their homes in Florida. Judy’s true love was her husband of 58 years and her family.

     The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Center for Hospice Care and their entire team.  They helped made the end of life, for Judy, a beautiful and peaceful journey.

     Cremation will take place and a celebration of life in memory of Judy will be held at a later date.  Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer Chapel, 521 N.
