John Michael Terhune

SOUTH BEND - John Michael (Mike) Terhune, who grew up in South Bend and was a 1961 graduate of Riley High School, died last Tuesday in Fairfax, Va., nine days before his 66th birthday.
With a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and a master's in business from Harvard, he became a top management executive for a variety of companies in Montreal, Nashville (Tenn.), St. Louis (Mo.), London (Ontario), New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia and the Washington, D.C., area. He spent a year as a civilian engineer supervising the building of roads in Vietnam during that war, and in the 1980s founded a venture capitalist company with two partners, where his specialty was overseeing the turnaround of struggling firms into profitable ones.
He leaves his wife of 18 years, Jane Terhune, two sons, John Michael (17 years old) and Brendan (16), and a daughter, Allison (26). He was proceeded in death by his parents, Vic and Louise Terhune. Also surviving are mother-in-law Mary Winters of Brick, N.J., brothers-in-law Richard Militano of Yardville, N.J., and Joseph Militano of Brick, brother Jim Terhune of Louisville, KY, and nieces Kara Sloan and Krista Terhune.
A memorial service will be scheduled in New Jersey at a date to be determined. Individual remembrances may be made to the Covenant House for runaway children in New York City or the Planned Parenthood organization.
