He also leaves behind his sisters, Mary (Mike) Rienks of South Bend and Judy Pyclik of Huron, Ohio, along with his brothers, Patrick Sweeney of Paola, Kansas, and Thomas Sweeney of South Bend. Jim was preceded in death by his brother, William Sweeney.

A proud 1959 graduate of Riley High School, Jim went on to attend Purdue University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business. While at Purdue, he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. Jim was a self-made man, receiving a partial scholarship and selling Collier’s Encyclopedias to earn money to pay his way through college. One of his trains was even used for an Eagle Scout project and is now proudly displayed at A Rosie's Place. His love for trains brought joy not only to him but also to those who had the opportunity to share in his hobby.

A devoted Purdue fan, Jim could often be found cheering on his beloved Boilermakers. His enthusiasm for his alma mater was infectious, and he took great pride in the accomplishments of Purdue's athletic teams and its students.

His love for his son and grandchildren was evident in everything he did, and he always made sure they knew just how much they meant to him.
