John F. Hock

Jan. 30, 1928 - Oct. 5, 2013 SOUTH BEND - John Francis "J.F." Hock, 85, residing at Sanctuary at St. Paul's, passed away at 11:05 am Saturday, October 5, 2013, in Hospice House, South Bend, with his loving family at his bedside. John was born January 30, 1928, in New Carlisle, IN, to the late John H. and Naomi (Carr) Hock. On June 10, 1956, in Brazil, IN, he married the former Joanna Loveall, who survives. Early in his life, John's family moved to Donmoyer Avenue in South Bend when his father began working at Studebaker's.

He attended Monroe Elementary School, graduated from Riley High School in 1945 and Indiana University, Bloomington in 1956. He later earned his master's degree in mathematics from Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN.

After graduating from high school, John began working at Studebaker's, attending graduate school at IUSB and working for several dentists and doctors' wives, cleaning houses, tending their gardens, and putting up and taking down their storm windows. He continued doing some of these jobs even after retirement. While at Studebaker's, John and a buddy enlisted in the Indiana National Guard, serving for six years. He was a member of St. Joseph Lodge #45 F.&A.M. and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend.

In 1956, John began teaching math at the "old" Washington High School on Sample Street. After the "new" Washington High School was built, he was transferred there to the math department. In addition to teaching, John was also the Comptroller for Washington High School, counting and depositing money collected at every basketball and football game. For many years, until his retirement in 1997, he served as the head of the math department. John was elected to Phi Delta Kappa in recognition of his leadership in teaching. John loved to travel, and he and Joanna have been in all of the lower 48 states, particularly enjoying visits to National Parks. The trips were always well-organized, fun and learning experiences.

Trips to Mexico and Canada with Ann and Jan were highlights to be remembered. John also had a "green thumb" and enjoyed tending his flowers around the house and in the house. As Joanna's health deteriorated, John assumed more and more responsibilities and took over the cooking. He had his own recipe book and recipe box. He taught himself how to make jams and jellies, and his 14-day pickles were wonderful. He greatly enjoyed sharing these with family and friends. A decent and well-respected man and a wonderful husband and caregiver, John will be missed by family and friends, but always remembered.

In addition to his loving wife of 56 years, Joanna, John is survived by sisters, Mary Ruth Fenzau of Carmel, IN, and Konnie Broaddus of Florida; brothers, James Hock and Donald (Ruth) Hock, both of South Bend; brother-in-law, Ray Oman of Carmel, IN; and nieces and nephews, David Hock of South Bend, Jim (Tami) Hock Jr. of Mishawaka, Jeff S. (Sue) Fenzau of Indianapolis, Bryan (Lisa) Broaddus and Becky (Mark) Sellers, both of Florida, Pam (Bob) Walta of Alabama, Carrie Van Norman of Wyoming, Scott (Kim) Hock of Alabama, and Jim (Jen) Hock and Jan Hock, both of South Bend. Also surviving are many great-nieces and nephews, as well as special friends, Rick (Tina) Way and Mary Good (Mike) Palmer.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Naomi Hock; grandparents, Joseph and Vanvellia Carr and Charles and Minnie Hock; sister, Kathleen Hock Oman; sister-in-law, Carol Hock; and brothers-in-law, Chris Fenzau and Bud Broaddus.

Memorial services for John will be 3:00 pm Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at Sanctuary of St. Paul's, 3602 S. Ironwood Drive, South Bend, with Rev. Dr. Adelia Kelso of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Friends may visit with the family 1 hour prior to services on Sunday at St. Paul's. Palmer Funeral Home - Guisinger Chapel, is assisting the family with arrangements.
