James Richard Terhune - Class Of 1958 VIEW PROFILE

James Richard Terhune

September 26, 1940   ~   May 2, 2023

James Richard Terhune, a retired journalist who covered sports at the old Courier-Journal & Louisville Times Co. for nearly three decades, died May 2 in Denver. He was 82.

Jim moved to Louisville in 1969 to join the staff of The Louisville Times. He covered various sports and regional teams, but his most memorable beat was college basketball, in particular the University of Louisville Cardinals; this included the school's storied 1980 and 1986 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship teams. In retirement he wrote the commemorative 25th anniversary book "Tales from the 1980 Louisville Cardinals," published in 2004.

When the afternoon Louisville Times ceased publication, he continued his coverage of regional teams at The Courier-Journal and reported on the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 and Atlanta in 1996. At his 1998 retirement party, Jim was presented Honorary Cardinal status by U of L Athletic Director Kenny Klein.

He was born September 26, 1940, in La Porte, Ind., son of the late Victor W. and Louise Richards Terhune. He grew up in South Bend, Ind. and earned his degree in history at Hanover (Ind.) College. He worked at the Pharos-Tribune in Logansport, Ind., and the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune before coming to Louisville. He moved from Louisville to Denver in 2021 to be near family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Michael Terhune. He is survived by his daughters, Kara Sloan (Tyg) and Krista Terhune (Andreas); grandchildren Benjamin and Britta Sloan and Ian Terhune; and many more dear family and friends.

His family wishes to thank those who have already reached out and expressed how remembered he'll be for his kindness, humor, humility, empathy, and how he made everyone feel as though they were the most interesting person in the room.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. May 19 in Chapel Columbarium in Cave Hill Cemetery. A reception will follow at the University Club from noon to 3 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Wholly Kicks at www.whollykicks.org
