Mary Jo (Cowger) Tompos
Mary Jo Tompos Aug. 18, 1929 - Dec. 20, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Mary Jo Tompos, 85, passed away at 9:15 am Saturday, December 20, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was born on August 18, 1929 in North Liberty, Indiana to Gerald and Chloe (Evers) Cowger. On September 9, 1950 in South Bend she married Andrew A. Tompos. He died on July 14, 2006. Mary Jo was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Cunnagin.
Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia (Robert) McLain of Rineyville, KY, and Vicki Tompos of South Bend; four sons, Andrew L. (Carol Sullivan) Tompos of South Bend, David (Kim) Tompos of Lakeville, MN, Anthony (Dorothy) Tompos of Granger and Richard (Sheryl) Tompos of Culver, IN; 13 grandchildren: Joe (Sonja), Rob, Amy (Steve), Wendy, Brandy, Matthew, Abby, Nicole, Jessica, Westen, Adam, Anna, and Ryan and 19 great-grandchildren. Her sister-in-law, Mary Merryfield and niece, Julie Rowland of Muskogee, OK, also survive her.
Mary Jo graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School in 1947.
She retired from Memorial Hospital. Mary Jo was active in the theater winning the South Bend Civic Theater Best Actress Award in 1990 and was in many local TV and radio commercials. She loved singing and belonged to several local choral groups. Mary Jo was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral and a former member of Holy Cross Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Tuesday, December 23, 2014, in St. Matthew Cathedral. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 Monday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30.
