SOUTH BEND - June Rice, 82, residing in South Bend, passed away peacefully at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2011, in her home. She was born December 22, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan, an only child of Sam Jones Hardin and Dulcie Hause Hardin, and had lived in South Bend all of her life.

June graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School and attended Anderson College. While attending Anderson College, she met the love of her life, Donald Lawrence Rice. They were married December 19, 1948, in South Bend, and enjoyed 56 years together until his passing on July 3, 2005. She was also preceded by her father, Sam Hardin on Sept. 7, 1988, and her mother, Dulcie Hardin on August 15, 2009. Mrs.

Rice retired in 1988 as a secretary at Indiana University of South Bend. She was an active member of South Side Church of God, where she served as organist for nearly 50 years. She was also active with The Women of the Church of God, and served on its Indiana State Board of Missions. She and Don worked together as Youth Leaders for many years, and helped to form the Speeders of the Church where they served as Co-Presidents. She was also a member of Gideon's International and W.C.T.U.

June is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen E. & Ken Norman of South Bend, and her four grandchildren whom she adored, Jennifer E. (Anthony) Phillips of Indianapolis, IN, Phillip A. Norman, Sarah A. Norman, and Christy M. Norman, all of South Bend.

Services celebrating the life of June Rice will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at South Side Church of God, 7351 U.S. 31 South, South Bend. Rev. Greg D. Crump and Rev. Keith Stork will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. today at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

The family would like to express their grateful appreciation to the staff at The Center for Hospice Care, Inc., for the excellent care they have given to June.
