Irene Jolche (Weger-Stroud)

Irene (Jolche) Weger-Stroud

Dec. 23, 1922 - Oct. 12, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Irene Weger-Stroud, 89, of 2652 Tamarac Place, passed away at 3:15 am Friday, October 12, 2012. Irene was born on December 23, 1922, in South Bend, to John and Elizabeth (Serlosi) Jolche. Irene had seven brothers and sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. Her husband, Andrew C. Weger, preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons, Kerry (Gretchen) Weger of Bloomington, IN, and Kris (Sandy) Weger of Plymouth, MI; 3 grandchildren, Kelly L. Weger of Denver, CO, Kendall M. Weger of Holland, MI, and Max A. Weger of Plymouth, MI; and stepchildren, Jerry Stroud of Dallas, TX, Donald Stroud of Livonia, MI, Stephanie Stroud Winkler and Laura Stroud Mitchell of Cape Coral, FL.

In addition to her very immediate family, Irene had a wonderfully supportive extended family in the form of Edward and Judy Richart, Tom, Jill and Kiley Weinberg, and Shane, Renee, Brooklyn, Jersey and Chase Bays. Her name was Irene, but everyone called her "Toots." She was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters, all of whom lived in the South Bend, Mishawaka area. It was a very close-knit family group that gathered together frequently for family outings and picnics.

Toots graduated from Riley High School in January 1941, and married Andrew Weger on June 6, 1943, with whom she had two sons, Kerry and Kris.

Toots was an excellent athlete and excelled at ball games, which were a staple of family outings. Poker and other card games were invariably included and passionately played at the family reunions. Her early life passion was bowling. The game of bowling allowed her to travel about the country with her team as they competed in various tournaments from Florida to California. During these travels her lifelong friend, Frieda Laiber, often accompanied her. Toots enjoyed working in the yard, tending to her plants and trees and cleaning her house. She used to say: "There is always something to clean," and she loved to chat. If gold medals could be awarded for chatting, Toots would have won several. Anyone who ever chatted with Toots considered it a major accomplishment if they could get a word in edgewise. Most importantly, Toots loved her grandchildren and her great-nieces and nephews. She very much enjoyed playing with them and imparting life's great lessons along the way, teaching her grandchildren, Kelly, Kendall and Max, poker and card playing skills acquired at earlier family outings. She also shared her ball playing skills with her great-great-nieces and nephews, Brooklyn and Jersey, Chase Bays and Kiley Weinberg.

All who knew and loved her will miss Toots. The family would like for everyone who reads this and knows Toots to tend their plants, flowers, trees and yards, chat regularly with your friends, neighbors and family, and love and enjoy your children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Salvation Army and the Goodwill. Cremation has taken place. A small, private family memorial service and burial will take place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue, is handling services.
