SOUTH BEND - Roy J. Meilner, 88, of Erie, PA, formerly of South Bend, IN, died Saturday, August 6, 2011, at Saint Vincent's Health Center. Born in South Bend, IN, May 3, 1923, he was the son of the late Roy and Grace Langfeldt Meilner.

Roy was a graduate of Riley High School in South Bend, IN, and had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II.

Roy was a pharmaceutical rep and then worked as an inspector for 28 years with Quality Machine Products, Studebaker, and U.S. Standard Products. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on Wall Street in South Bend, was an avid Ham Operator with the call letters WA9BIG, and was a volunteer with Civil Defense. Roy was an avid motorcyclist and rode many places with his late wife of 58 years, Marie C. Zornig Meilner. He also dabbled in artistic woodworking, and was an exercise enthusiast. Dad was always upbeat, positive, had a hilarious sense of humor; and for years he would help collate and put together Braille Bibles for those in need. He was a loving and an involved father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Marie, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Meilner.

Roy is survived by his son, Larry Meilner, and his wife, Sheryl of North Liberty, IN; twin daughters, Linda Smith and her husband, Don, and Laura Kobek and her husband, Kenneth, all of South Bend, IN; four grandchildren, Rowland and John Rose, Jason and Matthew Basil; two great-grandchildren, Rylie and Blake Basil; his best friend, Gerry Meilner; and two brothers, David Meilner of Lafayette, IN, and Twill Meilner of Pensacola Beach, FL. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 805 S. 29th Street, South Bend, IN 46615, on Tuesday, August 30th, at 1 p.m., with the Reverend Steve Latzke officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Valley Memorial Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements by the Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Road, Erie, PA.
