SOUTH BEND - Harold A. Nelson, age 91, of South Bend, passed away at 8:45 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2014 in his home. Harold was born April 18, 1922 in South Bend to the late Albert and Sandra (Segerdahl) Nelson and has lived in the area most all of his life.
Upon graduating from Riley High School, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. While serving his country proudly during WWII, he was a B-17 Pilot conducting 27 bombing missions along with several other missions throughout Europe. Harold was a first lieutenant when he received an honorable discharge in 1946. After serving his country, Harold graduated from Purdue University in 1949 with a mechanical engineer degree and then retired from Dodge Manufacturing after 33 years of service.
On January 26, 1952 in South Bend, Harold married his true love, Virginia Lee Caron. Harold is survived by his wife of 62 years, two sons, Kurtis J. Nelson of South Bend, Kevin H. Nelson of South Bend and two grandsons, Kevin M. and Timothy C. Nelson.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 7 at Palmer Funeral Homes - River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave. South Bend, IN 46615. Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to services. Harold was a charter member of The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. Contributions in memory of Harold A.
