Betty J. (Smith) Malone

NILES - Betty June Malone, age 95 years, of Niles, Michigan, died peacefully at 9:18 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, with family gathered around at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, Indiana, following a brief illness.

She was born on June 23, 1922, in South Bend, Indiana, to Dale Emerson and Bertha (Nunemaker) Smith. She was graduated from South Bend Riley High School, and has lived in Niles most of her life. She was employed in the offices of Garden City Fan for many years.

Betty was a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Niles. She practiced various hand crafts including paper tole and copper tooling. She enjoyed watching the birds at her birdfeeders, and her greatest joy was her family.

On August 8, 1942, in South Bend, she married Paul D. Malone, with whom she celebrated the remarkable sixty-first anniversary of their wedding prior to his death on August 19, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and by a son-in-law, Charles Egbert on August 17, 2005.

Surviving family includes her daughters, Kathleen A. Egbert (& Deb Richards) of South Bend, and Jeri D. (& David) Masten and Sheila K. (& Rick) Catt, both of Ludington, Michigan; grandchildren, Laurie (& Tom) Johnson, Paul Egbert, Amy (& Tate) Gardner, Sarah (& Mike) Lee, Ryan Masten, Erin Masten, and Rachel (& Nick) Ploeger; great-grandchildren, Emily, Noah, Tate, Carson, Conner, and Julia; Betty's sisters, Maxine (& Fred) Shoemaker of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Marilyn Banner of Rochester Hills, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.
