Richard A. Maurer, 85, of South Bend, Ind., passed away on Tuesday, Oct 29, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was born on June 5. 1917, from the union of Ralph and Helen (McMichael) Maurer, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Charles Maurer in 2001.

In 1942 he married Vera D. Hoglund. Together they had one son, Richard Michael Maurer and wife, Mimi, who reside in Portage, Mich.: and four grandchildren, Scott, Jennifer (Matt) DeMaagd, Brian and Kristen.

Dick was a graduate of Riley High School. 

While in school. Dick had the tenor lead in all the operettas such as "The Chimes of Normandy" and "Countess of Panada." He was also a member of the senior boys octet, and in 1937 was president of the annual Christmas Dance. In 1938 he joiner' the National Bank and Trust Company where he worked his way up to vice president in the trust department. During this time he also ran the LaSalle Hotel and managed many South Bend buildings. Dick continued to work for National Bank and Trust until retirement in 1975. He completed American Institute of Banking courses, was past president of the A.I.B. area chapters. and was secretary and treasurer of the Banking Owners and Managers Association. He specialized in real estate management. In 1976 he joined Cressy and Everett Better Homes and Gardens, where he became a million-dollar producer. He was a charter member of the Jaycees. an avid golfer and fisherman, and  was a great Notre Dame fan. Dick was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

Services for Dick Maurer will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Nov. 1, in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home. Visitation was from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Gloria Dei Lutheran a Church.
