Valeria Kathryn Sagendorf, age 94, of South Bend, IN, passed away on December 29, 2019.  Val was born October 23, 1925, to William Charles and Mary Valeria (Gerschoffer) Barker in Brazil, IN.  She graduated from South Bend Riley High School in 1943, and on June 9, 1945, married Alfred Joseph Sagendorf.  They had 3 children, Jacquelyn Ann (Robert) Kendig of Live Oak, Florida, Robert David (Cheryl) Sagendorf of Lafayette, IN, and William Joseph (April) Sagendorf of South Bend, IN. She was preceded in death by husband Alfred, son William, sister Gloria, brother Richard, and son-in-law Robert Kendig.

Survivors include 2 children, Jacquelyn and Robert, 4 grandchildren, Theodore (Kimberly), Russell (Mariluz), Tanya and Joseph (Jamie), 4 great-grandchildren, Alzayah, Ilyana, Adelynn and Averie, nephews Gary and Scott, and caregiver and friend Rebecca Thomas. 

Valeria was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church of South Bend and served her Lord and church family in many areas: secretary and financial officer, editor of the weekly bulletin and the Immanuel Herald newsletter, the church history book, compiler of several editions of church cook books printed at home, organizer of a celebrity auction, Sunday School teacher for many years, seamstress of all the pew cushions in the entire church, and she maintained the memorial board, name plates, and memorial book.

Val originally wanted to become a nurse, but worked instead in the administration offices of Studebaker, Bendix Missile, Defense Contract Administration Service Office, and lastly in airport security at St. Joseph Co. Airport.

Val was a diehard Cubs fan, having attended free 7-9 innings at Wrigley after her elementary school day. She herself played softball and was a bowler.  She enjoyed crossword puzzles, scrabble, writing poetry, stamp collecting, making Easter lamb cakes, and countless needlepoint crafts on plastic canvas shared with all.  Val enjoyed travel to visit family in Massachusetts, Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Hawaii, California, and Washington.

Services for Valeria will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, IN 46614.  Friends may visit with the family from 12:30 – 2:30 before the service.  Private ennichement will be held at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN.
