SOUTH BEND - Harold Gilbert Earl, 81, of South Bend, passed away Friday, April 28, 2007, in St. Paul's Retirement Home. Born September 2, 1925, in Libertyville, Ill., he was the son of the late Richard and Myrtle (Holtz) Earl. Harold was also preceded in death by a brother, George Earl.

Survivors include a brother, John R. (Mary) Earl of South Bend; a nephew, John R. (Charlene) Earl of Ocala, FL; a great-niece, Christine (Scott) Zehngraff, and their children of Lilburn, GA; a great-nephew, Tony (Jeanette) Earl of Ocala, FL; and cousins, Margaret (Don) Schulz of St. Peters, MO, and Patricia (Ralph) Syrek of Roswell, GA.

Harold graduated from Riley High School in 1948 and then attended IUSB.

He was a tool designer for Witt Engineering. He retired from the County Auditor's Office. As a teenager, Harold spent 31/2 years in a Japanese prison camp where he contracted polio. However, he did not let the paralysis of his leg keep him from an active life. He enjoyed mini-golf, fishing, and spending time at his brother's lake cottage and driving the boat for water skiers. His two best friends were Abby, his poodle, and Trixie, a German shepherd mix.

There will be no visitation and no memorial service, per his request. To send condolences, please visit www.mcgannhay.com.
