LORA "OBIE" OVERHOLSER

April 8, 1929 - Aug. 4, 2010 SOUTH BEND - Obie Overholser, 81, residing in South Bend, passed away at 2:05 a.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation Center, South Bend. He had been in failing health for the past two years. He was born April 8, 1929, in South Bend to the late Lora & Ada Mae (McManamaw) Overholser, and had remained a lifelong resident.

He is survived by his wife, Lois J. Hoskins Overholser; daughters, Laura (Dennis) Iorio of Granger, Rebecca Bowyer of South Bend, Dawn (John), and sons, Dean of South Bend, and Donnie of Granger. Also surviving are step-daughters, Debbie (Randy) Foster of Granger and LuAnn Baldoni of South Bend; five grandchildren, Dawn Splawski, Kyle (Ashley) Dentino, Justin (Heather) Overholser, Carrie Foster, and Jamie (Brian) Parker; seven great-grandchildren, Kolin Splawski, Dylan Collins, Austin Curry, Bryce Dentino, Hannah Shreve, Jacob Shreve, and Lexie Foster. He also leaves a brother, Buddy (Sharon) Overholser of Bremen; and two sisters, Marge Marks and Geri Bell, both of South Bend.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Sonny Splawski; two sisters, Mary Sidenbender and Carol VanDeSample; and a brother, Dean Overholser.

Obie graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School in 1948 where he was very active in basketball.

He retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation following 33 years as a painter and glazer. He loved to travel and he loved sports, especially the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and Notre Dame. He enjoyed going to his grandson's high school basketball games. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Bowlers Hall of Fame. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in South Bend. The family wishes to express special thanks to the entire staff at Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation Center, Station 300, and to Southern Care Hospice.

Visitation for Obie will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. A Memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, in Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 South Twyckenham Drive, South Bend. Rev. David Schrader will officiate. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to the services in the church on Sunday.
