Helen J. (Toppel) Wirt

Helen J. Wirt Feb. 7, 1919 - June 29, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Helen J. Wirt, 95, of South Bend died Sunday, June 29, 2014 in her home with her family by her side. She was born February 7, 1919 in South Bend to the late Anna (Ettl) John Toppel.

In December 1943 she married Wallace B. Wirt who died in 1994. Helen was also preceded in death by her siblings Cecilia Opfel, Elizabeth Hartman, Annie Toppel, Anthony Toppel, Joseph Toppel, John Toppel, Jr. and Andrew Toppel.

She is survived by her nephew, Tom McNaughton and wife Lynn of Largo, Fl. and several nieces and nephews.

Helen retired from the Bendix/Honeywell Corp. in 1974 after 35 years of service as an inspector. She was a graduate of Riley High School and belonged to the Big Sisters Program for many years. She was an avid cat lover and volunteered for many of their organizations. She was a member of St. Anthony De Padua Catholic Church and was active in the Christ Child Society.

Graveside services will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday July 5, 2014 in the Chapel at Highland Cemetery with Rev. David Ruppert officiating. Burial will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to Pet Refuge, 4626 Burnett Dr., South Bend, IN, 46614. The Welsheimer Family Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
