Virgil C. Van Meter, 81, residing on Hildreth Street, South Bend, Ind.. passed away at 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday. Sept. 13, in Memorial Hospital. Mr. Van Meter was born on May 30, 1919, in Grass Creek, Ind., to the late Clarence and Ruth M. (Sedam) Van Meter, and had resided in South Bend since December 1945, coming from Bel Air, Md. He was formerly employed as a truck driver for General Mills in Gary, Ind., and in 1948 began his career with Gates Chevrolet in Mishawaka as a salesman where he remained for 30 years.

On April 17, 1942, in South Bend, he was married to Ruth E. Reasor. He is survived by his wife Ruth of 58 years; his mother, Ruth M. Van Meter of South Bend; a sister, Bernice Norris of South Bend, and by several nieces. Mr. Van Meter was , a 59-year member of St. Joseph Lodge #45 F&AM; and a 50-year member of Ordor of Eastern Star Chapter #569, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend. Mizpah Temple. American Legion River Park Post #303, and Loyal Order of Moose #58. He was also a mem-ber of St. Joseph Valley Low 12 Club, past member of River Park Fisherman's Club, and River Park Lion's Club, Kiwanis Club, and a former YMCA volunteer.

He graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School and attended the University of Notre Dame on a football scholarship. He also attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. He served in the United States Army during World War II and went to Officers Candidate School, graduating in October 1942.

He enjoyed coaching football. bowling, collecting coins, square dancing, playing cards and woodworking. He attended Grace United Methodist Church of South Bend.

Services for Mr. Van Meter will be at 11 a.m. on Friday. Sept. 15, in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 14, in the Palmer Funeral Home. Contributions in memory of Virgil C. Van Meter may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children.
