August 13, 1933     ~     September 16, 2021

Published in Chico Enterprise-Record & South Bend Tribune

Phyllis Ann Mannion passed into the hands of the Lord on September 16, 2021.  She was born August 13, 1933, in South Bend, IN to Daniel Frank Kozsis Papp, Jr. and Julia Salomon Papp. She lived in Miami Beach, FL, Logan, UT and settled in Chico, CA in 1968.  She married Edmund (Ed) Mannion, Jr. on February 12, 1966 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Carmichael, CA. They both worked in the aerospace industry and enjoyed the Tahoe ski slopes while dating. They also sailed in San Francisco Bay and built a house in Chico’s Stilson Canyon. The house is currently being rebuilt after the 2018 Camp Fire.

Naturally studious, her early education was in South Bend. She later attended American River College and San Jose State. She graduated with honors in English from Chico State in 1969. Her working life had distinct phases: first as an Executive Assistant, then as a Classroom Aide while caring for her young family, and finally as a freelance editor, helping authors communicate clearly and correctly.

Phyllis had a way with words and was a talented writer. She brought joy to friends and loved ones with thoughtful, well-timed cards and messages that often included sensitively chosen quotes from scripture. An avid traveler with an adventurous spirit, she enjoyed speaking French on trips to Europe and always looked forward to sharing new discoveries and special moments with her family living there. A supportive wife, mother, grandmother, sister and loyal friend, she was deeply invested in those around her, never forgetting a birthday or anniversary.

Phyllis was a devoted Christian. She studied the Bible for many years through Bible Study Fellowship and other sources. Outgoing and fun, Phyllis loved holiday celebrations and always honored their deeper spiritual significance. Her faith inspired all who knew her and brought her courage and comfort in her final days.

She is survived by husband Ed, sister Louise Oram, daughter Shelley Ann, son-in-law David and granddaughters Audrey and Sofia Rose (London, England) and adopted daughter Carolina Rothan and her family (Paris, France). She was from a lively Hungarian family of seven sisters and a brother; there is a large extended family of nieces and nephews in South Bend and Indianapolis, IN, Berkeley, CA, Boulder, CO, Baltimore, MD and Memphis, TN

For those wishing to pay respects, a viewing will take place at Brusie Funeral Home (626 Broadway St, Chico) on Tue., Sep. 28, 5-7pm. A burial service at 9am on Thu., Sep. 30 at Glen Oaks Memorial Park (11115 Midway, Chico) will be followed by a remembrance ceremony and gathering at Evangelical Free Church of Chico (1193 Filbert Avenue). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your church, favorite charity or Samaritan’s Purse, which supported families after the Camp Fire.
