SOUTH BEND - Denis Patrick Turnock, born September 20, 1932, in South Bend, Indiana, died April 25, 2013, at his home in Morganton, North Carolina. Denis attended St. Patrick's Grade School, J.W. Riley High School, and Indiana University where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. In 1954 he graduated from the University of Notre Dame after serving 2 years in the Korean War.

Also in 1954 he married Mavis Jean Davis of South Bend on the beaches of Honolulu where he was stationed at the end of the war. She predeceased him after 35 years of marriage. Together they raised 5 children in Miami, Florida, where he was a stock broker and real estate broker.

He also lived in Baumholder, Germany, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and had a home in Winter Haven, Florida. A lifelong Notre Dame fan, he was president of the Notre Dame Club of Miami, Florida, for many years, was a Knight of Columbus, member of Holy Rosary Church and Palmetto Golf Club. He enjoyed golf, his children and grandchildren, and was a knowledgeable collector of Japanese cloisonné, golf memorabilia, art and antiques. In his later years he enjoyed many car rallies in Scotland, France and Italy with his brother-in-law.

The family headstone at Highland Cemetery in South Bend depicts the 19th hole where he will be laid to rest with his wife and Turnock family.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Maureen Megan and Mark Young, Morganton, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Denis Michael and Doris Turnock, Vienna, Austria; son, Brian Patrick Turnock, Austin, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Anatoly Arutunoff, Tulsa, OK; and nephew, and his wife, Trace and Maya Sheehan, Brooklyn, N.Y.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Jill Turnock Belmonte, Orlando, FL; son, Kevin James Turnock, New York, NY; and parents, Pat and Fritzi Turnock of South Bend. Also mourning his loss are 10 grandchildren, Matthew, Mitchell and Madison, Alex, Mavis, Sean, Christina, Michael, Kelen and Colin, and a great-niece, Quinn. As son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and uncle, each and every life was in some way in his hands.

He took care of everyone with his great enthusiasm for life, family, Irish heritage and Notre Dame. Our lives will never be the same but, oh, how lucky we were to have known and loved him!!

 Viewing will be at the McGann Hay Funeral Home, 2313 E. Edison Road, on Wednesday, May 1, 11:15, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 1 P.M. and interment at Highland Cemetery.
