Gerald (Jerry) Martin Slein, 66, passed away on April 27, 2023 after an extended illness. He died as he lived, surrounded by his family. Jerry was known for his humor and generosity. He loved gathering with his family and strived to carry on cherished family traditions.

Jerry was born on March 27, 1957 in Pittsburgh, PA to Albert and the late Eileen (Gross) Slein.

Jerry leaves behind his loving wife of 41 years, Dawn (Rosander) Slein; his beloved children, Benjamin Slein of New Albany, IN, Jonathan Slein of Provo, UT, and Steven Slein of Broken Arrow, OK; and his cherished granddaughter, Kathryn Dawn Slein of Broken Arrow, OK; his father, Albert Slein of South Bend, IN; and his adoring sisters Marilyn (Tom) Swartz of South Bend, IN, Bobbie Axelberg of South Bend, IN, and Karen (Pat) Powers of Granger, IN; his devoted mother-in-law Carol (Paul) Nye, of Plymouth, IN; and caring in-laws, Kathy (Norm) Wineholt of LaPorte, IN, Carl (Melanie) Rosander of Murphy, NC, Dave (Rhonda) Pendergast of LaPorte, IN, Lloyd (Sherry) Rosander of Grovertown, IN, Nancy (Bob) Rigney of Shelbyville, KY, Sharon (Gemma) Pendergast of Houston, TX and Wray Roccaforte of Tijeras, NM. He will be missed by 16 nieces and nephews whom he doted on, along with all their children: Mark Swartz (Elizabeth Treacy) of Chicago, IL, Lisa Heilman of South Bend, IN, Joe (Sarah) Heilman of Granger, IN, Melanie Edmondson (Jeff Gropp) of Granger, IN, Rachael Powers (Fawzi Breidi) of Indianapolis, IN, Daniel Powers of Indianapolis, IN, Lindsey Wineholt (James Butler) of Austin, TX, Carlee Wineholt of LaPorte, IN, Tifanie (Donnie) Lacefield of South Bend, IN, Bridget (Beau) Holcomb of Plymouth, IN, Erin Morris of Plymouth, IN, Valerie Pendergast (Tony Carl) of Michigan City, IN,  Abby Rigney (Will Fortune) of Shelbyville, KY, Patrick Rigney of Louisville, KY, Zack Roccaforte of Philadelphia, PA, and Shae Roccaforte of Albuquerque, NM. He will also be missed by all the admirers who follow the Krusty Krab baseball team.

In 1979, Jerry graduated from Purdue University with a BS in business and marketing. He began his professional career by managing Pendy’s Stop-N-Go, a Plymouth convenience store and community fixture for over 20 years. The remainder of his career was spent working in social services, first at Good Will Industries in South Bend where he was the Second Chance Coordinator providing services to countless clients with barriers to employment, and then at the Salvation Army in South Bend where he managed the Kroc Center Food Pantry.

In his free time Jerry enjoyed various sports (real and fantasy), good music, and time with friends and family. He was a talented athlete who loved playing basketball and was a regular at gyms across northern Indiana and the campus of Purdue. As a lifelong fan of Purdue and Notre Dame sports, Jerry held Notre Dame Basketball season tickets with his best friend, Eric Diamond, for over 20 years, and ushered Notre Dame Football games for a decade. He was a valued member of the community who coached and supported local youth sports, spending countless hours throwing batting practice in Centennial Park. Jerry especially cherished coaching and spending time with his three sons in whom he instilled a lifelong love of baseball.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 1st at the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd. South Bend. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana or Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana.
