Eugene (Gene) Walter Holewinski, 90, passed away in Houston, Texas on Thursday, September 2, 2021. A native of South Bend, Indiana, Gene lived most of his life there. He was born to Walter and Mary Holewinski on May 14, 1931. He married Ann DeBlase on May 23, 1953, in Holy Cross Church.

Surviving are his two daughters, Pamela (Hariharan) Iyer of Fort Collins, Colorado; Elizabeth (Charles) Green of Spring, Texas; his son, Christopher (Susan) Holewinski of Indianapolis, Indiana; grandchildren Matthew (Nita), Kristin (Niko), and Geoffrey Iyer; Elaine (Jordan) Purdue; Chloe (Michel) Holewinski,; Robert and Matthew Green; and five great grandchildren, Scott and Owen Iyer; and Ava, Ella, and Leo Purdue. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, sister Jacquelyn, brother-in-law August, and grandson Kevin.

Mr. Holewinski was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and, in 1949, he graduated from Riley High School in South Bend, with a focus in English and Machine Shop. He played defensive tackle on the Varsity Football Team. Following high school, he attended Indiana University South Bend. He was drafted prior to graduating and served in the Army, stationed in Germany, during the Korean War. After his military discharge, Gene returned to South Bend and continued his education at the University of Notre Dame. He graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Science.

He had a career with the United Stated Government Defense Contracts Administration Services organization where he provided contract administration services for the Department of Defense. In 1997, he retired. Gene loved to travel. He visited all 50 United States – driving to 49 of them, Canada, Mexico, Central America, British West Indies, Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica, South America, Africa, and Europe. He also enjoyed boating with his family and friends on Lake Michigan. He learned to downhill snow ski, and skied, up until age 80, at several locations in the United States, as well as Europe.

Friends are invited to join with the family for a visitation at the Sacred Heart Parish Center, Notre Dame, Indiana from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25. 2021. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held immediately afterwards at the Parish Center. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery in South Bend. Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., South Bend, Indiana 46628, is in charge of arrangements.
