John Kocsis

July 19, 1930 - May 27, 2021

John Kocsis passed away May 27th, 2021 after an extended stay at Woodland Manor in Elkhart.  He was born to the late George and Helen (Toth) Kocsis on July 19, 1930 in South Bend, IN.

John fought in the Korean War, was stationed in the Chorwon Valley during it's closing year.  He earned the following:  CIBAD : Combat Infantry Badge  UNSM : United Nations Service Medal  KSM W/2 Bronze Service Stars : Korean Service Medal - with 2 Bronze Service Stars.  Before the War he worked at Studebakers with his father.

After the war and after Studebaker closed, he worked as a custodian for the South Bend City Schools System. (Clay Junior and Senior High schools are a few I remember him talking about.)

He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of books,  his love of comics , sketch art , and his history knowledge.  He often talked about his Hungarian heritage, and tales his father and grand father had passed on to him about the 'old country' as he called it.  He will be missed....

John was Preceded in death by his wife Yolanda in June of 2009, and his sister Helen in August of 2010.

He is survived by his nephews Vince Deal of South Bend, IN. , Kenneth Deal of Alamogordo, New Mexico , niece Maria Deal of Roebuck, SC and 2 great nieces ; Sarah Riege of Elkahrt , IN and Briana Downing of Elkhart , IN.  Chapel Hill Funeral Home is honored to care for the Kocsis Family.
