SOUTH BEND - Mary L. Coen, 97, passed away at 1:11 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at the Hospice House, South Bend. Mrs. Coen was born on June 18, 1914, in South Bend, to the late George D. and Pearl B. (Carrier) Lawrence. She was a longtime and faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in South Bend, where she was active in the women's group.

On June 1, 1940, in South Bend, she married Charles Delos Coen, who preceded her in death on December 23, 2003. One daughter, Mary Carolyn Coen, preceded her in death in 1974. Two brothers also preceded her in death, John W. and George E. Lawrence.

Mrs. Coen was a graduate of Riley High School, where she was class salutatorian, and later served as an officer for her 65th class reunion. Her first two years of college, Mary went to Hanover College and secondly attended Manchester College for one year, receiving her teaching credentials. She was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. Mary was also an active member of the Chapter CZ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Mrs. Coen is survived by her nieces and nephews, Parmer M. (John) Battin of Venice, FL, Nancy (William) Hasse of San Diego, CA, Delos E. "Buster" (Nancy) Coen of Mishawaka, IN, Bob (Nancy) Coen of San Antonio, Texas, Lloyd R. Maxwell and Malcolm P. Maxwell, both of Downingtown, PA, Sandy (Debbie) Maxwell of Chester Springs, PA, and Ray Scot (Kimberly) Maxwell of Ponte Vedra, FL. Many great-nieces and nephews, including Carolyn (David) Sassano of Vienna, Virginia, as well as many great-great nieces and nephews also survive. Among Mary's many wonderful friends, the family would like to acknowledge Ann Schmiedeler, Kathy Thompson, Ruby Patterson and Jane Erler.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Rev. Don Neely will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Mary L. Coen may be donated to the Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
