Julia Linda Tompos

Julia Linda Tompos, 79, of Brooks Howell Home, died Saturday, Aug. 8. Tompos was a native of South Bend, Ind. and had been a resident of the Brooks Howell Home since 1980. She graduated from South Bend Riley High School and the Cincinnati Deaconess Training School. She also graduated with a BS. degree in social work from Schauffler College in Cleveland, Ohio.

Tompos was commissioned a deaconess and served as parish deaconess in her home church, Sacred Heart Mission in South Bend. She also served at Immanuel Church there. She went to Michigan City, Ind. to serve the German Methodist Church and then to Hammond, Ind. where she served both Central Park Hungarian and Centenary English Methodist Churches. She then followed appointments to Cincinnati, Ohio where she served at the Washington Camp Methodist Church and Wesley Chapel. 

She became associate matron of Bethany Home for Business Girls in Chicago, Ill. She then worked as secretary for Methodist Children's Home in Berea, Ohio. She was director of Bidwell-Riverside Center in Des Moines, Iowa. She served as director of Eloy Community Center in Eloy, Ariz. Upon retirement, she moved to Glendale, Ariz. and then on to Brooks Howell in 1980. She was a member of French Broad United Methodist Church in Asheville.

She is survived by two sisters, Olga McGregor and Ella Wheat, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Anton Tompos of Niles, Mich. and Michael Tompos Jr. of Bettendorf, Iowa.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Brooks Home Chapel. The Revs, Cecil K. Myrick and Phillip Sisk will officiate. Burial will be in Albuquerque. Penland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
