Howard Nietch, 88, of Niles, Mich., formerly of South Bend, Ind., died at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 28, in his home in Niles surrounded by his family. He was born on Jan. 13, 1916, in Logansport, Ind., to George and Clara (Albert) Nietch and has lived in Niles for 40 years coming from South Bend. Mr. Nietch retired from Kimball Forklift Sales after 20 years of service and also was employed by Wilson Shirt Co. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Niles, a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of V.F.W. 1167 and Eagles Aerie 435.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mabel E. (DeRose) Nietch; a son, Charles (Ronda) Nietch of Niles; a daughter, Patricia Moore of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren, Michael (Denise) Moore of Austin, David Nietch of Lockport, Ill., Wayne Moore of Mishawaka, Annamarie (Mike) Waterman of Marcellus, Mich., Danielle Moore of Austin, Margretta Moore of Austin, Jennifer (Scott) Betzner of Indianapolis, Ind.; nine great-grandchildren, Spencer and Riley Waterman, Kristina, Aaron and Tiffani Betzner, Jovan Breeding, Zoe Moore, Austin Nage and Bodhi Ryan; a brother, Harold (Minnie) Nietch of Eastmond, Ga.; a sister, Dorothy (George) Nanos of Goshen; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eddie and Charles "Babe" Nietch; a grandson, James Moore; and by a great-grandson, Nicholas David Nietch-Zakas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, in St. Mary's Catholic Church.
