SOUTH BEND — Louis J. Verhoestra, 77, of 3045 Portage Road, Niles, formerly of South Bend, died at 3:30 am. Saturday in his winter residence at Lake Wales, Fla., of natural causes. Mr. Verhoestra retired in 1979 as a rate analyst for Tucker Freight Co. after 44 years of service. He was born May 5, 1913, in South Bend. He was a lifelong area resident and lived in Florida during the winter for the past 10 years.

On Oct. 26, 1935, in South Bend, he married Isabelle Scanlan. She survives with a daughter, Janet L. Snider of Niles; a son, Kenneth of Orlando, Fla.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frieda Carpenter of Pennsylvania and Margaret "Peg" Shirey of South Bend; and four brothers, Carl, Richard, and Robert, all of South Bend, and Arthur of Fairhope, Ala.

He was a member of Teamsters Local 364.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Matthew Cathedral. Entombment will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Kaniewski & Sons Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
