Margaret Buzolich (Wegner)

Margaret J. (Buzolich) Wegner

May 12, 1920 - June 7, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Margaret J. Wegner died June 7, 2012 in Northbridge, MA, where she had resided the last two years. Margaret was born to Andrew and Victoria (Klemens) Buzolich on May 12, 1920, in South Bend.

She graduated from Riley High School and was a graduate of Indiana University, with a degree in Library Science.

In 1946, she married Edward J. LeCouteur. He died in 1948 of complications from injuries sustained from his service in the Army Air Corps in WW II. In 1964, she married Erwin P. (Sam) Wegner. He died in 1976.

She was a school librarian in the South Bend Community Schools, retiring in 1985.

Surviving are children, Edward J. (Rebecca) LeCouteur of Manchuag, MA, Patrick A. Wegner of Fullerton, CA, Pamela M. (James) Alexander of Stonington, CT, and J. Michael Wegner of South Bend; and brother, Robert Buzolich of South Bend. A sister, Frances, died in 1960. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and two nephews.

On a visit to Margaret's home one would always see a stack of library books -- the best seller at the time, plus a few from a favorite author. The TV could be on a PBS special or a sporting event, and if the TV was not on, classical music would be on the radio. The phone would invariably ring with a call from one of the many friends. A prolific letter writer, many of her friendships were sustained over the years by correspondence. Playing bridge, volunteering for numerous organizations, theatre, concerts, attending Notre Dame Basketball games or having lunch or coffee with a friend filled her days. Margaret loved to travel, whether it was a day trip to Chicago or sipping tea in Hong Kong. For a year in the early 50's, she and her son Ed lived in Portugal with her sister, Frances, who was employed by the State Department. Her travels were varied and far-flung, and destinations were oftentimes shaped by her reading. Every trip, whether in the United States or abroad, was always preceded by a thorough study of the area, country and culture.

Margaret was the strong thread that held together a family of children, step-children, grandchildren and step-grandchildren. She always wanted to know what was "going on," but lectures were rare. Instead, her life was the example and her support was unlimited.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 6, 2012, in St. Matthew Cathedral. ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., is assisting the family.
