She graduated from Riley High School and studied Drama at Indiana University of South Bend.

She met the love of her life, Floyd Flanigan, through his sister, with whom she was working. They married on Dec. 29, 1944, while he was on leave. He had to return to his base on Oahu, Hawaii, but was Honorably Discharged on Sept. 17, 1945. They weren't separated again until his death. Together they lived and raised five children in South Bend, Ind.

Elinor was a Girl Scout leader. She did health education in the schools for the TB League. Later she worked for the head of the school district's drama department doing costumes, make-up, etc. Elinor loved to sew and create things for her grandkids and others. She also loved music and playing her piano. Throughout her life, religion was important to Elinor. Wherever they were, she found a church to worship in and support.
Upon retirement, they traveled around. They lived in Oregon and Arizona, before moving to Alaska to be with family. In Arizona, Elinor helped start and supported two community theaters.

In 1999, Floyd passed away. Elinor continued to find ways to work with people. She visited family and friends, but returned to Alaska to stay in 2009.
