Harry H. Weiss Jr

Harry H. Weiss Jr. of Carlisle, Pa.. a former resident of North Tarrytown, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997, at Carlisle Hospital. He was 76. He was born Oct. 28, 1921, in South Bend, Ind., to Harry H. and Marie Speicher Weiss. He graduated from Riley High School in South Bend in 1938 and was awarded a Harvard National Scholarship. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvard in 1942, graduating magna cum laude. In 1993, he received a master of business administration degree from Harvard. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Harvard Business School Century Club.

On Oct. 18, 1953, he married Arline Tiedemann at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Queens. The couple lived in Queens until 1958, when they moved to North Tarrytown. the village now known as Sleepy Hollow. They retired to Carlisle in 1989.

Mr. Weiss worked as an analyst for Pan American World Airways for 12 years. He then worked for Kennecatt Copper Corp. for 23 years in several quantitative analysis positions. From 1977 to 1985, he served as vice president and secretary for Pacific Tin Consolidated Corp., now known as Zemex, in New York City. After retiring in 1985, he volunteered as a tax aide in the AARP Tax Counseling Program for the Elderly in Tarrytown and Carlisle. Mr. Weiss was a former member of Union Church of Pocantico Hills. He was active in the church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, trustee and assistant treasurer. He belonged to First Presbyterian Church in Carlisle. 

As a hobby, he enjoyed studying the shape of probability distributions resulting from calculations based on estimates, his family said. In addition to his wife, Mr. Weiss is survived by two daughters, Ceceile Strand of Carlisle and Carol Staudter of Ossining; and four grandchildren. Two sisters, Jane Pritchard and Mary Wilson, died earlier.

Visitation is tomorrow at the Coffey Funeral Home in Tarrytown. The funeral is at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Union Church of Pocantico Hills, 555 Bedford Road in Sleepy Hollow. Burial follows in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Union Church of Pocantico Hills or the Kidney Foundation of Central Pennsylvania, 4813 Jonestown Road, Suite 101, Harrisburg, Pa. 17109.
