Marcelle H. (Martindale) Newman

Feb. 19, 1922 — April 7, 2006 

Marcelle H. Newman, 84, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 7:25 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2006, in the home of her daughter. She was born on February 19, 1922, in South Bend, IN, to the late Edgar C. and Minnie B. (Wolter) Martindale Sr.

On July 16, 1948, in South Bend, she married William C. Newman Jr. He preceded her in death on February 10, 1992.

Mrs. Newman is survived by two daughters, Pam (Ralph) Acito of South Bend and Karen (Greg) Probst of Indianapolis, IN; and a son, Christopher Newman of South Bend. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Tony (Rosemary) Acito of South Bend, Kimberly (Reg) Acito-Tanig of Houston, TX, Matthew and Kristen Probst, both of Indianapolis; and three great-grandchildren, Sydney Acito, August Acito and Kaylee Tanig. Mrs. Newman was a lifelong area resident.

She graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School in January 1940. During World War II she was an air raid warden, going around neighborhoods checking for compliance. Mrs. Newman worked as an administrative assistant and bookkeeper in a variety of businesses in the South Bend area. She retired in 1983. After her retirement, she volunteered at the Leighton Center. Mrs. Newman was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church.
