SOUTH BEND - Virginia V. Seely, 89, of South Bend, IN passed away at 2:00 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2011 in her home. She was born on February 17, 1922 in South Bend, IN, one of three siblings born to the late Steve J. and Ora Della (McClane) Kovatch. Mrs. Seely is survived by her daughter, Carol Seely Powers of South Bend, IN; son, Douglas D. Seely of Apollo Beach, FL; a favorite niece, Lee Ann Cochran Regner; three grandchildren, Thomas Powers III, Scott G. Powers and Analyse E. Seely and four great grandchildren, Gabrielle T. Hunnicutt, Joseph Powers, Ian Medley and Thomas Jude Powers IV. She is also survived by a nephew, Jack Cochran and his family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ada June Kovatch Cochran; brother, Edward S. Kovatch, who was killed in WWII and her husband, Clifford M. Seely on February 25, 1986.

Mrs. Seely was a lifelong resident of South Bend, IN. She was a graduate of Riley High School where she and her sister were known as the dancing Kovatch twins, even though they were not twins. She still loved to dance. She attended the College of Commerce and worked at Studebaker Aviation.

On June 21, 1943, she married the love of her life, Clifford M. Seely. The two resided in Carlsbad, NM where Mr. Seely was stationed during the war years in the United States Army AirCorp. He was sent to the Pacific Theater so she returned to South Bend where they made their home after Mr. Seely returned from WWII. Mrs. Seely was an active member of the community.

She was employed at the American Lung Association and retired in 1985. She also did volunteer work for the American Lung Association. She was one of the founding members of the Centre Township Fire Dept. Auxiliary. She was very active in her church, Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for eighteen years. Mrs. Seely very much enjoyed her family and extended family. The family enjoyed time at a lake cottage where she loved to fish. She enjoyed her cousins and friends in the area and they shared many meals together, always filled with good time and lots of laughter. She loved to laugh, even if it was at herself and was known to tease everyone. She enjoyed many travels with Clifford before his passing and with family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011 in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 3, 2011 in the funeral home.
