William W. Niemann

October 15, 1939 ~ January 21, 2023         83 Years Old

William “Bill” Niemann, 83, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2023 at home with his wife of 62 years by his side.

Bill was born on October 15, 1939 in South Bend to Walter and Louise (Gruber) Niemann. On March 12, 1960 he married his high school sweetheart.  She survives along with a daughter Janelle Stewart, two sons Joseph (Andrea) Niemann and Dr. TJ (Melissa) Niemann, six grandchildren Mitchell (Lias) Niemann, Dr. Cassandra Niemann, Jake Stewart, Samantha Stewart, Amanda Anderson, and Brady Riesen, two great-grandchildren Layza and Maria, two sisters Sandy Hinkle and Mary (Tim) Weber, a brother Wally Niemann, and a sister-in-law Susan Niemann.  Bill was preceded in death by a brother Dick Niemann, son-in-law Rob Stewart, and brother-in-law Tom Hinkle.

Bill’s true passion was teaching and enjoyed his 38 years at Mishawaka High School retiring in 2005. Bill and Donna were snowbirds enjoying life in Florida and summers on Eagle Lake in Michigan. Bill was an avid golfer with a hole-in- one to his credit. After retirement he took up watercolor painting and most recently wood carving. He enjoyed playing euchre and held the Niemann Family Euchre Trophy for many years. He was a deeply spiritual, kind, and gentle man and a friend to everyone. He desired to make the world a better place. His presence will be dearly missed.

Bill was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Meals on Wheels (Cass County), St. Vincent de Paul Society, South Bend Cursillo, Indiana Retired Teachers, and the Mishawaka Education Association Executive Board.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 26, 2023, from 10-11am at St. Pius X Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be live streamed at StPius.net or Facebook.com/StPiusGranger.  Cremation will follow, with inurnment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation, MBC-Found, 12902 Magnolia Dr., Tampa, FL 33612, www.moffitt.org/give or St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Pius X Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, IN 46530. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Robert Oppman for his care of Bill.
