James T. Mumford

December 8, 1945 ~ October 8, 2022 (age 76)

James T. Mumford, 76 years old, passed away unexpectedly at 5:25 p.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. Jim was born on December 8, 1945 in South Bend to the late Norton B. and Joan (Zimmerman) Mumford. He has remained a lifelong resident of South Bend. On July 12, 1980 in South Bend, Jim and Mary Beth Wensits were united in marriage.

Along with Mary Beth, his loving wife of 42 years, Jim is survived by their son, Thomas J. Mumford of Chicago, IL; brother, John (Rosanne) Mumford of South Bend; sister-in-law, Karen (Paul) Nadeau of El Sobrante, CA; three brothers-in-law, Robert Wensits of South Bend, Richard (Chris) Wensits of Lantana, TX and Tim (Snezana) Wensits of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; and his Godson, James (Gloria) Mumford of Portage, MI. Jim is also survived by nieces and nephews, Kova Kolondzic, Jenica Raney, Kimberly Wensits, Nick Wensits, Andrea Wensits, three aunts and many cousins and extended family who loved him very much. He leaves behind his four-legged girls who he loved so very much.

Jim was a retired public servant. He worked with the South Bend Police Department for 24 years and with the University of Notre Dame Police Department for 20 years. Jim proudly served his country with the United States Army Reserves. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a 1963 graduate of Riley High School. Jim was an avid Notre Dame fan. He loved working outside and took great pride for having an immaculate yard. Jim was a giving and caring man who touched every person he has met. He was the pillar of his neighborhood.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022 at the St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend. Friends may visit with Jim’s family from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Friends may also visit on Friday morning from 10:00-10:30 at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of James T. Mumford may be donated to Pet Refuge, 4626 S. Burnett Drive, South Bend, IN  46614. Online condolences may be offered to Jim’s family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
